Cristina Suárez-Gómez obtained her MA in English Language and Literature at the University of Santiago de Compostela in 1997. She also holds the degree of Master in Linguistics from the University of York (2003). In October 2000 she started work as a researcher at the University of Santiago de Compostela; from October 2001 to September 2002 she stayed at the Department of Language and Linguistic Science of the University of York on a scholarship from the British Council and the Pedro Barrié de la Maza Foundation, and from August 2003 to July 2004 she worked as a Teaching Associate at the Department of Spanish of Brown University, USA.

In 2004 Cristina received her PhD in English Linguistics (European Doctorate) from the University of Santiago de Compostela. After a brief period at the Ramón Piñeiro Institute for Research in the Humanities, she obtained a position as Lecturer in English at the Department of Spanish and Modern and Classical Languages of the University of the Balearic Islands, where she teaches English Grammar II (undergraduate, 4th year), History of the English Language I and II (undergraduate, 4th & 5th years), and a PhD course on historical linguistics. In October 2010 she was promoted to a position as tenured Senior Lecturer.

Cristina's main areas of specialization are English historical syntax, pragmatics, and grammaticalization theory. Other research interests include English dialectal variation from both a synchronic and a diachronic perspective, women’s language (English and Spanish), contact Englishes, and issues related to the teaching and assessment of Galician, the Romance language spoken in northwestern Spain. At the 33rd AEDEAN Conference (Cádiz, 12-14 November 2009) she convened a workshop on the topic “Recovering the Northern dialects in the early history of English”, with presentations by Cristina herself, Sara Pons-Sanz (University of Nottingham), Julia Fernández-Cuesta (University of Seville), and Nieves Rodriguez-Ledesma (University of Seville).

Cristina is the convenor of the Sociolinguistics and Dialectology panel at the annual conferences of AEDEAN, the Spanish Association for English and American Studies, and the Principal Investigator of the project “Morphosyntactic variation in New Englishes”, under funding from the Spanish Ministry for Science and Innovation (grant FFI2011-26693-C02-02). This project is being carried out at the University of the Balearic Islands, in coordination with the Santiago-based project FFI2011-26693-C02-01 (Principal Investigator: María José López-Couso).
